The lead keel, as you might expect, sits midway between bow and stern. I need to fill the gaps fore and aft with the “false” keel.
I made a pretty rough template to select appropriate planks,
And then got going with the planer / thicknesser to achieve the dimensions I needed.
Producing lots of sawdust in the process.
And a wall of planks making up the keel shape.
Here, glued and clamped.
The forward end needed trimming.
and a channel cutting in to match the lead keel. I used my router to cut this cleanly.
Here, I am sliding in the glued false keel to check for fit.
The keel needed some final planing.
The aft end sawn off at a very carefully measured angle.
Finally, I needed to shape a piece of Iroko to cap the end of the keel.
I am sure there must be better was of clamping the capping piece in place for gluing, but I couldn’t think of one at the time.
Here all done with edges rounded off.
