Fairing the Hull (slowly)

Those lovely lines produced by wrapping the planks around the bulkheads don’t look quite as smooth when inspected closely. Planks are rectangular in profile after all, and the layer of fibreglass needs a nice smooth base, so time to remove some wood.

The first stage is to use a sharp fine set plane to remove peaks – including excess epoxy that I hadn’t wiped away before it set. After being over cautious to begin with, this didn’t take as long as I had expected; probably 8 to 10 hours for one side.

Next stage is to use a home made sanding board with 80 grit sandpaper.

The picture above is the sanded side and the one below is before I start planing. The pictures do not do justice to the difference.

I am moving on to the other side, before I do some filling of screw holes and then the final sanding stage.
